Why are Digitals so Expensive? | Fernvale Family and Childrens Photographer

One of the most frequent questions I get asked is “Can I just purchase the digitals?” followed by “Why are they so expensive?”

When seeking a professional photographer, you may consider the reason behind the seemingly high cost of digital files. It's natural to question the value of investing in something existing solely in the digital realm rather than in tangible prints. Though, there remains a unique charm in having photographs printed, framed, and displayed on walls or preserved in albums on your coffee table, creating tangible memories with friends and family.

As you sift through local photographers and narrow down your favorites, you find those whose work resonates with you. However, when confronted with the pricing, it may appear expensive, especially if you're primarily interested in the digital files and not physical products.

Have you considered viewing digital files as a luxury item?

Examine the images presented above, assuming they are digital files. Reflect on the endless possibilities it offers, from producing prints, albums, and large canvas prints to keyrings and scrapbooking. The creative potential is limitless. Consider the social media too! You can share it with family or set it as a screensaver.

This represents substantial VALUE.

However, once a photographer sells the digital file to a client, their capacity to derive further profit from that image ends there. If viewed in this light, digital files can be considered luxury items, priced based on their VALUE rather than their production cost.

Additionally, bear in mind that the images showcased above underwent a considerable amount of time to reach completion. Each image is subjected to a meticulous process – selection from the session, backup, color correction, and enhancement in the digital editing phase to create something that couldn’t otherwise be created by just anyone without the required skill or creativity. The photographer has invested hours in creating these photographs.

Presumably, you selected the photographer after perusing their website, social media, and appreciating their work. Envision collaborating with them to generate remarkable images of you and your loved ones.

Then comes the inevitable question – "But I can acquire all the digital files from another photographer for a lower cost."

Fantastic! If you admire their work, you should definately book them.

Each photographer has their unique pricing structure, influenced by individual business costs, processes, and client experiences. Operating a photography business involves more than just owning a good camera and lenses; considerations include business licenses, taxes, insurance, software, computers, websites, ongoing education, marketing, and various other expenses.

As a small business owner, I understand that success encompasses more than just financial gains. True success involves passion for the craft and making it a livelihood. This commitment translates into investing time in educational pursuits to enhance photography techniques and allocating resources to acquire high-quality equipment. This investment ensures that clients never regret their purchase, as the resulting images are of superior quality, professional in appearance, and captured under optimal lighting conditions.

Consumer choices play a pivotal role, providing the option to invest in items with a limited lifespan or to opt for lasting quality. The question of why digital files may seem expensive boils down to personal values. I offer a bespoke photography experience, allowing clients to acquire beautifully finished products or high-resolution digital files. Regardless of the presentation medium, be it a printed canvas or a captivating social media post, the pricing reflects the creativity invested both by me and the client.
