Why I Love Being a Brisbane Family Photographer | L.M.Broderick Photography

Brisbane & South East Queensland Family Photographer

I've been a Brisbane family photographer since 2011. That's over a decade of muddy shoes, gap-toothed smiles, toddler meltdowns, and the most beautiful light you've ever seen spilling across a paddock in the Lockyer Valley and Somerset regions.

And honestly? I wouldn't swap it for anything.

There are a lot of reasons why I love what I do, but there's something extra special about being a photographer right here in South East Queensland. So today I want to share exactly why I love being a Brisbane family photographer, and why this corner of Queensland is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful places to do this work.

The Locations Are Absolutely Breathtaking

Let's start with the obvious: South East Queensland is stunning.

I'm based in Fernvale, in the Lockyer Valley and the landscape out here is the kind that makes people gasp when they first arrive. Rolling green hills, wide open paddocks, golden afternoon light that just does things to a photograph. It genuinely never gets old.

Some of my favourite places to shoot around the Fernvale area include:

Wivenhoe Dam is one of my absolute go-to locations. The wide, open skies reflecting off the water, the grassy banks, the gorgeous filtered light in the late afternoon — it's the kind of place that makes every family look like they've walked out of a magazine. It's also a wonderful day trip destination for families, with picnic spots, walking trails, and beautiful views that make the drive out worthwhile even beyond the photos.

Fernvale itself has some absolutely gorgeous rural properties and open fields that I've been lucky enough to use for sessions over the years. There's something so authentically Queensland about wide open paddocks, warm light, and kids running barefoot through the grass.

Further away, I love working with families in locations around Toogoolawah, Kilcoy, and the beautiful Somerset Region. These areas offer rolling countryside, private properties, and that peaceful, unhurried feel that makes for the most relaxed, natural family photography sessions.

And for families who want something a little different, Lake Wivenhoe and the surrounding parklands make for a brilliant day out. Pack a picnic, let the kids run, and we'll capture the whole beautiful mess of it along the way.

The Brisbane region as a whole is rich with incredible photography locations, from the lush hinterland to stunning parklands, creek beds, golden fields and lakes. Every season brings something different, and that variety keeps my work feeling fresh and exciting year after year.

The Light in Queensland is Beautiful

If you've ever seen a Brisbane sunset, you already know what I'm talking about.

The golden hour light in South East Queensland is extraordinary. In winter, it arrives earlier and sits lower in the sky, casting long shadows and the warmest, richest tones. In spring and autumn, it's softer and more diffused … perfect for those glowing, skin-warming portraits that look incredible on a wall. Even summer evenings, when the light goes golden just before it dips below the horizon, produce some of the most dramatic, beautiful images I've ever captured.

As a Brisbane family photographer, I plan every single session around this light. It's my favourite tool, and it costs nothing, it just takes knowing when and where to be.

Families Here Are My Kind of People

I've photographed hundreds of families across Brisbane, Ipswich, the Lockyer Valley, and the wider South East Queensland region. And one thing I can tell you for certain: Queensland families are real.

They want to laugh, chase their kids through a field, have a cuddle in the long grass, and go home with photos that actually look like them.

That suits me perfectly … because that's exactly the kind of photography I love to create.

My sessions are relaxed, unhurried, and full of gentle guidance. I'm a mum of two myself, so I completely understand the chaos that comes with children. The meltdowns. The "I don't want to smile" phases. The toddler who suddenly decides they'd rather investigate a beetle than look at the camera.

That's all part of it. And often, that's where the magic lives.

Every Season Brings Something New

One of my favourite things about being a Brisbane family photographer is that our seasons keep my work constantly evolving.

Autumn (March–May) brings softer light, comfortable temperatures, and that beautiful golden warmth that makes outdoor portraits just glow. It's one of the most popular seasons for family sessions — and for good reason.

Winter (June–August) is honestly one of the best times for family portraits in South East Queensland. The light comes earlier, which means sessions fit easily before dinner. It's comfortable, never too cold, and the kids are far less likely to turn up with sweaty, red faces.

Spring (September–November) means wildflowers, lush green landscapes, longer days, and that beautiful sense of everything coming back to life. Sessions at this time of year feel energetic and joyful.

Summer (December–February) calls for early morning sessions to beat the heat — but the soft morning light is absolutely gorgeous, and there's something magical about capturing a family together in the long summer holidays.

I Get to Preserve Moments That Actually Matter

At the end of the day, this is why I do what I do.

I've been photographing families across Brisbane and South East Queensland for over a decade. I've watched babies become toddlers, toddlers become school kids, and school kids become teenagers. I've seen families grow & change. I've been trusted to capture a small slice of all of it.

That's not something I take lightly.

As a Brisbane family photographer, I'm not just taking pictures. I'm preserving time. I'm creating something that will hang on your wall, sit in an album on your coffee table, and be handed down to your children and their children one day.

There's nothing quite like the moment a client sees their images for the first time and bursts into tears … not because they're sad, but because they're seen. Because for the first time in years, they're in the photo. Because their family, right now, in this beautiful ordinary season, has been captured exactly as they are.

That's why I love being a Brisbane family photographer.
